The concept of sustainability is related to the production of food using farming techniques that aid in the conservation of natural resources. These methods have the smallest possible impact on the environment. One of the most effective activities you can do is eat sustainably.
Grow Something! You'll discover a deep appreciation about where your food comes from whether it is a herb in your kitchen or a backyard garden. By growing something, you will see everything that goes into your food. Millions of pounds of food get wasted each year. With this newfound appreciation, you will likely dispose of food differently and learn to reuse the material around you. Eat Seasonally! While you can buy so-called “fresh” food, this doesn’t always mean what you think. Most out of season foods are full of preservatives as they are grown far, far, away. Despite this, these foods are still advertised as Fresh. Drink Tap Water! In 2015, single-use bottles accounted for more than 8 million metric tons of plastic in our oceans. Moreover, liquids are the hardest to ship around the world, leading to more fossil fuels being released into the atmosphere. Filtering water from your tap is a great way to lessen your environmental impact. Shop Locally! Shopping locally creates a healthy way of keeping your money in your community. With this money, farmers can keep growing foods for more people to enjoy. Furthermore, you can talk directly with the farmers and find out exactly what they are growing their foods with. Buy Less Junk Food! Besides health issues, junk food's main problem is its packaging. There is twice as much packaging as there is food. These materials are not recyclable. They end up in landfills or littered on roads, in forests, or in the oceans. Vote! There is a lot of legislation that restricts manufacturers abilities to abuse our environment. Voting to pass these laws will show that we have a voice, and we demand to be heard. For a comprehensive list of the legislation affecting, click here. You, me, and all of us at Second Law Lifestyle can all make a difference, but we must work together.
